In 2015, Huawei spent 59.6 billion yuan ($9.2 billion) in research and development, accounting for 15% of revenue, more than $8.5 billion of Apple (3.5% of revenue). In the past ten years, an accumulated 240 billion yuan ($37 billion) was invested in research and development by Huawei; and there are 79,000 research and development staff in Huawei, accounting for 45% of the total numbers.
By December 31, 2015, Huawei has applied 52,550 Chinese patent applications, 30,613 foreign patent applications. Except for patent filings, the number of granted patents for Huawei is also huge. By the end of 2015, Huawei has 30,924 granted patents, with a stable increase in each region, 5,052 granted patents in US, and 11,474 granted patents in countries of Europe.
Huawei licensed 769 patents to Apple in 2015, while Apple licensed 98 patents to Huawei. According to the number for patent licensing and market scale of the parties, Huawei started to charge royalties from Apple.
