CNIPA recently published the statistical data of patents and trademarks in the first half of 2021.
(1) Patent In the first half of the year, 339,000 Chinese invention patents were granted. 1,327,000 utility model patents and 393,000 design patents were granted.
By the end of June 2021, the number of valid invention patents in China was 3.324 million, among which 2.454 million were filed by domestic applicant (excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan), a year-on-year increase of 23.0%. 33,300 PCT international patent applications were accepted, with a year-on-year increase of 12.6% In the first half of the year, 28,400 patent reexamination cases and 4,300 invalidation cases were concluded.
(2) Trademark In the first half of the year, 3.724 million trademarks were registered in China. By the end of June 2021, the number of valid registered trademarks was 33.548 million, a year-on-year increase of 22.4%. 2,954 applications for Madrid international trademark registration were received.
In the first half of the year, CNIPA completed 82,000 trademark opposition cases and 188,000 trademark review cases.
(3) Examination cycle By the end of June 2021, the average examination cycle of Chinese invention patents has been reduced to 19.4 months. The average cycle of trademark registration is stable within 4 months. The goal of CNIPA is to reduce the examination cycle of Chinese invention patents to 16.5 months by the end of 2022.
