On February 6, 2025, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) launched WIPO Technology Trends Report: The Future of Transportation. The report highlights that global innovation in the transportation sector is increasingly focusing on greener, futuristic technologies, such as air taxis, wireless charging for electric vehicles, and autonomous cargo ships. Since 2000, over 1.1 million invention patents related to future transportation, sustainability and digitalization megatrends have been published. Among these, the number of patent applications in sustainable power technologies has seen the most significant growth, while patents related to traditional fossil fuels have experienced slower growth.
In the field of future transportation technologies, China, Japan, the United States, South Korea, and Germany have collectively generated nearly 1.05 million invention patents since 2000. China, in particular, has dominated the electric vehicle (EV) market, with its market share continuously rising in recent years. This has driven robust growth in China's patent filings related to future transportation. Leveraging its strong foundation in the EV sector, China has also seen a steady increase in patent applications in key areas such as battery technologies and autonomous driving technologies, injecting significant momentum into the development of future transportation technologies.
