Following the restructuring approved by the 13th National People’s Congress, the State Intellectual Property Office of China (SIPO) adopted the English name China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) on August 29, 2018. Its website became http://www.cnipa.gov.cn/.

CNIPA was placed under the newly established State Administration for Market Regulation rather than directly under the State Council.

Its responsibilities expanded beyond patents to include trademarks and geographical indications. The changes sought to strengthen and coordinate intellectual property administration and enforcement under integrated supervision.
