CNIPA released the statistical data of intellectual property related work in 2021. By the end of 2021, the statistics of Chinese patents, trademarks and other intellectual property rights are as follows:
● Patent
696,000 invention patents were granted in China, including 110,000 filed by foreign applicants, 3.12 million utility model patents and 786,000 design patents were granted in China.
CNIPA received 73,000 PCT patent applications, in which 68,000 were filed by domestic applicants. 54,000 patent reexamination cases and 7,100 invalidation cases were closed.
According to the 35 technology fields classified by the World Intellectual Property Organization, three fastest-growing fields in numbers of valid invention patents were information technology management method, computer technology and medical technology, up 100.3%, 32.7% and 28.7% respectively.
The average examination cycle of invention patents was reduced to 18.5 months.
● Trademark
Till 2021, the number of valid trademark registrations in China was 37.24 million. CNIPA received 5,928 international trademark applications using the Madrid System from Chinese domestic applicants. 164,000 trademark opposition cases were examined and 383,000 trademark review cases were heard.
The average examination cycle for trademark registration was stabilized at 4 months, and the registration cycle for trademark application of general circumstances was reduced to 7 months. The average cycle for trademark oppositions was compressed to 11 months, and the average cycle for rejection review cases and complex review cases was compressed to 5.5 months and 9 months respectively. The average cycle for trademark change applications submitted through online system was maintained within 24 days, the average cycle for trademark renewals was maintained within 12 days, and the average cycle for trademark transfers was maintained within 2 months.
