In 2011, Beijing’s First and Second Intermediate People’s Courts concluded 60,000 cases, an increase of 485% over 1995, when the former Beijing Intermediate People’s Court was divided into two courts. To address the rapidly growing caseload, the Beijing Third Intermediate People’s Court was established on August 6, 2013, and opened on August 21, 2013.

The three intermediate courts hear first-instance cases assigned to them by law, together with appeals and protests concerning decisions of the lower courts in their respective areas. From August 21, 2013, their territorial jurisdictions are as follows:

Beijing First Intermediate People’s Court: Haidian, Shijingshan, Mentougou and Changping districts, and Yanqing County.

Beijing Second Intermediate People’s Court: Dongcheng, Xicheng, Fengtai, Fangshan and Daxing districts.

Beijing Third Intermediate People’s Court: Chaoyang, Tongzhou, Shunyi, Huairou and Pinggu districts, and Miyun County.
